A lot of backyards in Midlothian have the bones for something great - mature trees, good yard space, a solid home. But without a functional outdoor area, all of that potential just sits there. That's exactly what we were working with on this one. The homeowner wanted a real place to step outside, sit down, and actually use their backyard.

We built a pressure treated wood deck right off the back of the home, connecting directly to the screened porch entry. The framing is clean and solid, the railing system is consistent all the way around, and the stair placement gives you a natural flow from the driveway into the yard. Nothing over-engineered - just a well-built platform that does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Pressure treated lumber is a smart call for this kind of application. It handles the Virginia humidity, resists rot and insects, and holds up season after season with minimal upkeep. Fresh off the build, it has that bright natural wood tone. Give it some time and a good stain, and it settles into something that looks even better long-term.

What we love about a build like this is how much it changes the way you use your home. Before, there was no real transition between inside and outside. Now there's a dedicated space to have your morning coffee, let the dog out without worrying, or have a few people over without crowding into the screened porch. It's a simple addition that makes a big daily difference.

Deck builds are one of those projects where the details matter more than most people realize - post spacing, rail height, stair stringers, ledger connection. We take all of it seriously because a deck needs to be safe and sturdy, not just good-looking. If your backyard has been sitting unused and you've been thinking about adding something like this, we're happy to talk through what makes sense for your space.
