Here's what we were working with - a dirt driveway that had no real structure, no drainage, and no defined edges. The kind of setup that turns into a muddy mess every time it rains and slowly erodes year after year. This is a common situation for wooded, rural-style properties in the Midlothian and Chesterfield area.
The approach here wasn't just to dump gravel and call it a day. A proper gravel driveway starts underground. We used a GeoCell system, which is a honeycomb-style grid that gets filled with gravel and locked into place. It keeps the stone from shifting, sinking, or spreading out into the yard over time. That's the difference between a driveway that holds up for years and one that needs to be regraded every season.
Drainage was a big part of this job too. We installed a channel drain along the garage apron to intercept water before it could pool or push its way under the structure. Getting the water moving in the right direction - away from the home and the driveway surface - is what protects everything long-term. It's one of those details that you don't think about until water starts causing damage.
The finished driveway is clean, level, and well-defined. The gravel surface ties into the landscape naturally, which matters a lot on a wooded lot like this one. A retaining wall was also part of the scope to keep the surrounding grade in check and prevent soil from working its way back onto the surface. Everything works together as a system.
This is the kind of work we do across Midlothian, Chesterfield, Powhatan, and the broader Richmond area. Gravel driveway installation, drainage solutions, retaining walls - we handle all of it and we build it to last.
