Sloped backyards are one of the trickier landscaping challenges out there. Without the right structure in place, you're dealing with erosion, uneven ground, and a yard that's basically unusable. That's exactly what we were working with on this Midlothian job.
We built a tiered Belgard retaining wall to cut into that hillside and give the slope some real structure. Belgard block is one of our go-to choices for walls like this - it's built to hold, and it looks sharp doing it. The wall runs the full width of the slope and steps down with the grade, which keeps everything tight and intentional rather than patched together.
Once the wall was set, we filled in the upper bed with fresh mulch. A thick, even layer like that does two things at once - it keeps the soil in place behind the wall, and it gives the whole area a finished, polished look. Below the wall, we laid fresh sod to bring the lawn back together and tie the backyard into a cohesive space. New sod coming in clean next to the wall makes a big difference in how the whole yard reads.
What we ended up with is a backyard that actually works now. The slope is controlled, the lawn has a clean edge to grow against, and the mulch bed gives the upper area a low-maintenance finish. It functions better and looks better - that's the goal on every job like this.
Midlothian has no shortage of yards with tough grades and hillsides that need real solutions. If your backyard slope has been giving you problems - erosion, bare soil, wasted space - a setup like this is worth a serious look.
