A lot of backyards in this area have good bones - nice homes, decent yard space - but nothing actually pulling people outside. That was the situation here. The homeowners had a screened porch up top but no real ground-level space for grilling, gathering, or just sitting outside with a drink. We fixed that.

We installed a Belgard paver patio right off the base of the screened porch stairs. The result is a solid, level surface that connects the elevated porch to the yard and gives the whole back of the house a finished, intentional look. Belgard is one of our go-to materials - it holds up well, drains properly, and looks great without a lot of ongoing maintenance.

What we love about this layout is how functional it is. There's room for seating, room for a grill setup, and enough open space that it doesn't feel cramped. The darker border pavers framing the field give the patio clean, defined edges that separate it from the surrounding lawn. That detail matters more than people realize - it's what keeps everything looking sharp over time.

Paver patios like this one are one of the most practical investments you can make in your outdoor space. They add usable square footage, hold up through Virginia's weather swings, and genuinely make the backyard somewhere people want to spend time. This one pairs perfectly with the screened porch above it - two layers of outdoor living working together.
